Union Bluff Grill

oday I am wearing a tee shirt with YORK BEACH on the front and it certainly brings back the memories from my visit in September. The three York’s ( York Village, York Harbor, and York Beach) make Maine the perfect vacation for the traveler in all four seasons. My visit to the Union Bluff Hotel and Meeting House in York Beach was something out of history, yet right in the heart of the modern world. With its beginning in the 1800’s and having three name changes over the years; i.e., The Wahnita (1900’s), The York Plaza Hotel (1930), Union Bluff Hotel (1976), today the Union Bluff is modern, beautifully decorated and overlooks the ocean and still is the charm of the Beach. The ambiance offers the remembrance of arriving horse and carriages, steam trains from the days of old to Adirondack chairs, plenty of parking and happy people enjoying their moments at the beach. Vacations of the past were for months at a time by the sea, today it is for night, weekends and weeks. The staff is at your service as only the people from Maine can be. The weather for all seasons makes this hotel a very special place to stay. 

They have frequent events throughout the year and each offers the traveler a perfect outing for a weekend. (Special events!) By-the-way one of my best times in Maine was during the Winter with snow on the beach!

Now I must tell you about the food in the Union Bluff Grill accented with a quaint fireplace and beautiful leather furniture. There is a lot of talent in the kitchen and they are determined to see that the food be exceptional and offer the guests the best food value anywhere. With Chef Karl Mace you have a real professional in place and believe me, the food is the best of York. This Chef should have his on television show. Forget Hell’s Kitchen bring on the delicacies of Karl! To watch Karl and Chef Nick Gough creating delicious combinations of food is amazing. These two guys are serious about being the best of York.

The menu is most unusual and at times will need an explanation regarding the unusual ingredients, but regardless of the well worded menu, you taste buds will explode in combinations of flavors that you will long remember. In the background you will also find Frosty Winer, who is Karl’s assistant. Presentation is Chef Karl’s forte. Just try “The Rock”, the most unbelievable “cook it yourself” appetizer with a hot rock from the Maine coast! Then you can continue with fresh cod, clam chowder and the lobster ravioli with scallops, lobster and mussels in a cheese sauce just to get you started. The plates presented are works of art and your dining experience will be one you will tell your friends about. If you are there when the Chef offers his “Chef’s Whim” menu, order it!

My personal thanks to the Chamber of Commerce in York for arranging an evening I will long remember. You certainly have fantastic members and

this one is special.
