Walterboro, South Carolina

"A Moment in Time!"

By Glenn Arnette, lll

On arrival in the quaint little community of Walterboro, South Carolina, just a short hop off I-95, I had no idea what to expect on my invited travel journey. As a South Carolina guy, I knew about Walterboro, but just had no reason to find myself in that direction. Well, that has certainly changed.

If you travel the state of South Carolina or travel from the New York area to Florida and find yourself on I-95, you must make your “halfway stop” in Walterboro, South Carolina and stay at the wonderful Hampton House Bed

and Breakfast.

You are only about three miles from the interstate and it is so historic, quiet, and stately with all of the other “Southern charms” rolled up into one.

The Hampton House Bed and Breakfast is owned and operated by Diane and Henry Forde. It is a two story Colonial Revival built in 1912. These two charming people offer everything from beautiful gardens of camellias, magnolias, azaleas and pecan trees all draped with Spanish moss. They have a tennis court, swimming pool, veranda sitting, port wine and cheese and a breakfast to die for! There are three large bedrooms with beautiful antique canopy beds and have all the amenities one would expect in a very expensive hotel. The beds are very comfortable and the bathrooms are wonderful with extremely good showers or antique tub baths.

The sitting room offers “historic” comfort and is packed with beautiful antiques. The dining room adorned with silver and china seats a large number of people at a traditional Southern styled family dining table. From the omelets to the French toast and that delicious orange juice, you will be prepared to face the day enjoying the grandeur of Walterboro. Be sure to request a tour of the Forde collection of doll houses, toy kitchens, paper and antique dolls. This is a real Low Country collection of art from the past and is a part of the experience while visiting the house. From weddings, receptions, private parties, luncheons, birthday celebrations and even a good old oyster roast, the Hampton House Bed and Breakfast is available. What fun!

Diane and Henry Forde not only have the historic knowledge to make your visit something to remember. They truly are “hands on” owners and seek to see happy smiles on the face of each and every guests. I only wish I had had more time to sit and chat.

For those traveling I-95 and do not have the time to go over to Charleston, South Carolina, don’t worry. You will find all of the beauty, history and charm on the streets of Walterboro. It is just a little bitty “historic place” with a lot of love!

The Hampton House Bed and Breakfast has won the People’s Choice Award for three years in a row and has been featured in Southern Living Magazine and awarded the Walterboro Key Historic Property Award by the Historical Preservation Society.

To contact the Hampton House Bed and Breakfast go the search line and type in Hampton House Bed and Breakfast, Walterboro, SC or . You can also call them and make your reservation at 843-542-9498.
