Let’s talk New York! When you head North to the City, do you plan the same itinerary; i.e., same hotel, same restaurants, etc? Well, break the mold and try something new. Let’s start with the hotel. You must try one of the Affinia properties, a distinctive collection of luxury and business suite hotels. Most recently I enjoyed the Eastgate Tower and found it exceptional. The Eastgate Tower combines the charm of the residential Murray Hill neighborhood with proximity to midtown businesses, Grand Central Terminal, the United Nations, shopping and fine dining. The rooms are beautifully appointed, very clean, and large and the staff extremely nice and helpful. My personal thanks go to David McManus, the Manager, and my special friends at the front desk, Renata, Purnima, Avni, Liz, Felix and Jessie. They really made me feel at home. On your arrival you will be greeted by the pros at the door, Patrick, Jerry, Louis, and Mariusz. They have all the answers and will take good care of you while staying there. The rates are very reasonable. For more information and other hotels by Affinia, go to their website at www.affinia.com. They have many hotels in the New York area.
Now, let’s get going! First, I want to tell you the subways are safe, and the price is right when you buy a pass for one week at $21 for unlimited use on the system. At $2 a pop for a one way ride, believe me, the pass is your answer. This eliminates all the problems with taxies and traffic and you are guaranteed to be
there on time.
With your transportation ticket in hand, take a morning trip by subway down to Canal Street in the Tribeca district where you can find all of the latest “look-a-likes” in handbags, jewelry, watches, accessories and more. You will not believe your eyes or the bartered prices. After shopping, take time to lunch in the area as there are many quaint indoor and outdoor restaurants to enjoy. Remember that you are very close to Little Italy and Chinatown. From there head back uptown to Daffy’s, the shop of “bargains for the millionaires.” Then over on Fifth Avenue you will find Fortunoff’s. It is the most unique store with three floors and on the third floor you will find a collection of unusual gifts, a must in shopping for that special person. Just down from Fortunoff’s you must go into Takishimaya and walk through the garden on the main floor. The floral aroma is Spring year round. But the most fun shopping outside the traditional is the Flea Market on Columbus Avenue at 77th Street. Now this is a Sunday thing to do. You must go for brunch at Isabella’s. It is so New York and the dining experience is wonderful. Curtis Allread is the Manager and he is a good old Southern guy from Jacksonville, Florida and Greensboro, North Carolina. You must go early to get a window seat, but remember to tell Curtis that Glenn sent you. It might help! Dine indoor or outdoor depending on the weather and enjoy a glass of champagne, their homemade fresh breads, and anything you can imagine, especially the eggs benedict. Oh, the coffee is really good too. The price is around $10-$15 per person. Directly across the street is the Flea Market, the one recently featured on The Apprentice with Donald Trump on TV. It is a maze of food, jewelry, gifts, and just about everything else you can imagine. From the market you can walk one block and visit the Planetarium and the Museum of History.
Restaurants are a must in New York and one of the most famous is Sardis. If nothing else, go by and have a cocktail at the upstairs bar and while there say hello to Joe, the bartender who has been there for years or try the downstairs bar and talk with Jose. They have the best drinks in New York and cheese and crackers to boot! Be sure to say hello to Sean Ricketts who will be at the reservations desk downstairs. He is the grandson of Vince Sardis and is the dining room manager. He is without a doubt one of New York’s finest. He truly handles all of the important dignitaries and celebrities and has the charm of his grandfather who is so respected by the theatre industry. If you plan to dine while there, be sure to make a reservation and request seating for dinner on the ground floor, left-hand side near the front. Join your favorite stars
Then there is Joe Allen’s, my choice for lunch. The salads are New York’s best and the atmosphere is perfect. Reservations are suggested for lunch or dinner. Another wonderful haunt would be Barrymore’s. A perfect place to have a cocktail before the theatre or dinner following. Celebrities love this place too!
Here is a real secret! If you like Chicken Soup, there is only one place and that is at the Café Edison in the Edison Hotel. For over 23 years Francis and Harry Edelstein have entertained the best in show business. The Café has been featured on Sex in the City and Neil Simon’s play,
45 Seconds From Broadway. It is another place to stop and relax with a cup of coffee before the theatre, as it is right in the heart of the district. Fantastic! Glenn Close declares the soup has healing powers.
What about the theatre? New York theatre is still the best. When you are looking for tickets, be sure to go the discounted ticket office located right in the heart of Times Square.
Last, but not least, you must try the Big Apple Open Bus Tours, both uptown and downtown. You will see all the great sites and enjoy just having a day outside. I tried the tours on my last visit and found they were better than ever. Then you must take a number one subway down to South Ferry and take the Staten Island Ferry. It is the best view of New York and the cost is only 25 cents. If taken at night you will find the lights of the City so beautiful. That almost requires another glass of champagne. So go for it! New York is more exciting when you take the time to rediscover the charm of the world’s most popular City.
