My Old Kentucky Home!

By Glenn Arnette, lll

Kentucky offers just about everything concerning horses; i.e., horse farms, horse parks, horse tracks, and much more, but there is only one place of beauty in the state that gives the entire picture for your family vacation. That is the Keeneland Race Course better known as the Keeleland Association located just outside the airport in Lexington, Kentucky. This national historic landmark is considered to be one of the most beautiful racetracks in the world. People come from around the world to marvel over the beauty of the grounds and track. Parking is easy and the track offers so many things for a visitor to do outside of “placing your bets!

The Keeneland Library is considered to the best equine collection of information and artifacts in the world. There is a complete history of the horse industry from beginning to present day. The Keeneland Gift Shop offers everything for the shopper related to horses from pins to clothing and more. The Track Kitchen is also open to the public and there you can have an early breakfast and see many of the famous jockey’s before they ready for the daily workout or races. This is the place to entertain yourself for a day or two. Just being able to be in the stables with the horses is certainly worth the trip.

If you enjoy racing, Keeneland Race Track is the one to see. The “polytrack” allows water to drain instantly and that allows the track to stay dry for all races. There are two major events each year; i.e., Spring Races (April 2-23, 2010) and Fall Races (October 8-30, 2010) To get into the track will only cost you $5 per person. And as we all say, What a deal!” For all other information go to their website.

The Kentucky trip was exceptional in every way, but the visit to the Three Chimneys Horse Farm and my tour of the farm and breeding barn really opened my eyes. Now I am a city guy, how was I supposed to know all the things about horses? I found out two things; i.e., horses live better that I do and they enjoy their life and get paid for it! Understand?

The farm is outlined with beautiful white and stone fences throughout the property and the land is immaculately kept in perfect condition. The barns are spotless and lined with mahogany and brilliantly designed to the lifestyle of the horses, expensive horses. For example BIG BROWN, the 2008 Kentucky Derby winner stands proud in his private quarters. With over 25,000 visitors each year, this is a major draw for people, but certainly is not the only famous horse on the property. If you plan to be in Midway, Kentucky and want to visit the Three Chimneys Farm, you must make a reservation and make it early. Call (859) 873-7053. For all other information go to their website. From the initial beginning in 1972 and a purchase of approximately 100 acres has now ballooned to approximately 2,000 acres over six horse operations which includes several different areas of the horse industry suck as a stallion area, 4 broodmare sections and a yearling section. This is a must on your visit to Kentucky!

Next I must tell you about Kentucky Fried Chicken and the original restaurant know known as Claudia Sanders Dinner House. I found it better than any chain around the country as the slaw is more delicious and the chicken is better than “finger licking good”! You can find this place in Shelbyville, Kentucky and believe me if you have the opportunity to dine with Charles Kramer of the Tourism Bureau in the town, you will know everything else about that wonderful community. There is pride in” them there hills”!

Next time I will continue by telling you about Shelbyville, the Luci Center and Metzger’s Country Store. Believe me we are going from country to first class when we end up in Louisville at the Seelbach Hilton where I was introduced to the Seelback Cocktail. (Champagne with a shot of Kentucky Bourbon!)
