More Than A Mint Julep!

By Glenn Arnette, lll

Now, I am in the final moments of my trip to Kentucky. “All Things Horses” has certainly been an education and should be considered when you travel to Lexington and Louisville.

On my final full day it was up early for breakfast and a stop at Wagner’s Pharmacy. This restaurant is located right at the back gate into Churchill Downs. It is frequented by jockeys, horse owners and other famous personalities. Located next door to Becker and Durski, the makers of silks for horse racing, this is like a private club for the ‘in crowd’. Well, you can be a part of that social standing when you order pancakes, eggs, bacon, biscuits, country ham, sausage gravy and more. This is paradise for breakfast lovers.

While dining and with that first cup of morning coffee, I spotted Wagner’s Racehorse Liniment. Now if it is good for horses, you know it is good for us. I could not purchase a bottle fast enough as I found out it was also good for bruises, minor injuries, superficial wounds, and pain, stiffness caused by exposure, sprains or strains. Who needs a doctor when perfect health comes in a bottle from Wagner’s? Call them today and order your bottle (502) 375-3800. Tell them Colonel Arnette told you about it!

After Wagner’s we walked across the street for our tour of Churchill Downs. I could imagine that famous race day with large crowds, cheers, cocktails, big hats, fancy people and horses. There was something about being on the grounds, as you could feel the history. The Derby Museum tour was a major highlight of the day. Wendy Trainmen is right when she said, “The Derby Museum is one of the best horse and history museums in the world!” You must see the slide and film presentation and saddle- a -horse and “ride like a jockey”. Not as easy as you think, especially when it is a fake horse!

Lunch was next in the Turf Club. Overlooking the track and a number of races, we placed bets, had mint juleps, yelled and screamed, enjoyed one of the best buffets ever and lost money. Well, I bet $12 and lost $12 and finally won $3.40. Some of us have to keep Kentucky going! The Turf Club is located indoors on the 3 floor clubhouse level almost of the finish line. This club is excellent for celebrity viewing! As stated, “The Turf Club is considered to be the most exciting Kentucky Derby Experience at Churchill Downs!”

I really had a “downer” when leaving Churchill Downs. What a wonderful time! The entire experience certainly finishes my story regarding “All Things Horses”! From Keeneland, the Kentucky Horse Park, the Thoroughbred Center, The Three Chimney’s Farm, Saddlebred Farm, the Luci Center to Churchill Downs, I know about horses! Wish I had a farm with lots of help!

Finally it was off to our final hotel. When I arrived at the 21C Museum Hotel, I had no idea what to expect. This is an EXPERIENCE and something you must do when in Louisville. From the lobby to the rooms you will be surrounded by RED PENGUINS! Created by the Cracking Art Group, you will always find a friend loitering in the halls. You can also take one in the room as night to keep you company. During the day you can place them in front of your room door to stand guard while you are away. The hotel has a wonderful, most unusual museum and you will not want to miss the completely different aspect of the art world and artifacts. You can google: 21CMuseum Hotel, Louisville for additional information or call (502) 217-6300 for reservations.

The hotel is located right in the heart of Museum Row in downtown Louisville where you can visit and enjoy the making of a Louisville slugger (Baseball Bat) to a history adventure with the Mohammed Ali Museum as well as many other stops and shops along the way.

Before bed and conversations with my RED PENGIUNE, we dined at “Proof On Maine”, located right in the hotel. This is fine food, great drinking, wonderful people and certainly is one of the best restaurants in Kentucky. What a night!

The following morning we were up early and off to Lynn’s Paradise Café for breakfast. What can I say! “Oh, My God, this can’t be real!” How can I tell you about a restaurant that is the most fun from the shop to the table that I have ever experienced? Bring the family, let them enjoy and you will have “a family thing” you will long remember. You can order everything and anything you “can’t” imagine. Just sit back and let them tell you things to order. It was reasonable, fun, hysterical, crazy, very decorative and more. I will return! The food was never ending and too much to try and tell you about, but I will tell you, “It is good!” That’s Southern for “fantastic!” Wait until you try the fun hats in the gift shop. Perfect for great family pictures.
