“America’s Historic Boutique Hotel!”

By Glenn Arnette, III

It starts with charm, has a lot of love and rounds out being one of the best stops while visiting in the great State of Maine. I am talking about Rockland, Maine and the Captain Lindsey House located at

5 Lindsey Street.

This is more than a Bed and Breakfast or a small hotel located right in the heart of the town. It is a charmer, an enchanting boutique hotel built as a private home in 1935. Today it is filled with charming people and owned / operated by delightful Innkeepers, Captain Ken and Captain Ellen Barnes. As the former owners / operators of the Schooner Stephen Taber for 25 years, this couple, married over 47 years, enjoys their work and life to the fullest every single day and this qualifies them as professional Innkeepers who know what a customer needs and enjoys.

The Captain Lindsey House has nine rooms and offers all the amenities for each and every visitor. From hair dryers to Wi Fi nothing is left out. From the comfortable beds to the thirsty towels, you can expect to enjoy your vacation away from home. Each morning there is an English Breakfast with everything from homemade breads, muffins and cakes to waffles, fruit, breakfast meats, egg dishes and more. This is truly a wonderful moment of the day as you get to meet many of the other guests visiting the Inn while enjoying that first cup of morning coffee. But wait until you step into the courtyard garden just off the main living room. There you will find a moment in Paradise with lots of peace and tranquility right in the heart of town. That cup of coffee and the newspaper will make your morning! In the evening you can relax after your day touring Rockland with a glass or two of port wine, fine cheese and crackers. Patricia Payeur, who hails from Kentucky, is the Manager who brings her special personality to each and every quest. Every morning she is responsible for the delicious spread on the Breakfast Buffet.

Without a doubt, she is the “hostess with the mostess” and will do everything to help you enjoy the stay. Frankly, she is like the President of the Chamber of Commerce because she knows the area and all the exciting things you can do. Her Southern hospitality bubbles to calm all the Northern spirits. The Captain Lindsey House is located right in the heart Rockland, Maine and very close to the beautiful waterfront, some of the finest art galleries, shops and excellent restaurants. As one of the three historic Inns of Rockland (Berry Manor Inn / LimeRock Inn), you know at the Captain Lindsey you are in good hands and your stay will be the best. These three Inns keep Rockland alive and jumping all year long.

There is something about Maine that makes you feel right at home. I suspect it’s the people, the food, the shops, the history, and a lot of “Yankee” love thrown in just the spice things up.

Ellen Barnes has a cookbook that is worth noting. (“Classic Maine Coastal Cooking”) It has been previewed on major television cook shows and network programs. This book offers the “home chef” the how to from Soups and Chowders, Fish and Shellfish, Cakes and Cookies and Pies, Puddings and Desserts. This is a fun and easy to do cookbook and can be ordered by calling 800-999-7352.

Finally there is a real adventure in the “family of Barnes”. Now operated by their son, Noah Barnes, the Schooner Stephen Taber is the perfect way to extend your stay at the Captain Lindsey House. Relax a couple days at the House, and then take a cruise on America’s Good Luck Ship, and return to the House to unwind after being at sea for a few days. This classic coasting schooner was launched in 1871 and still stands as a proud tribute to American craftsmanship. She is today the oldest documented sailing vessel in continuous service in the United States and has been honored by inclusion on the National Historic Register.
