Fly Fishing At Its Best!

By Glenn Arnette, lll

The mountains are calling, weather is cooler and the scenery is breathtaking. Boone, North Carolina offers each and every visitor a collection of exciting things to do every single minute of every day. From fishing, mountain climbing, horseback riding, shopping, great food and more, you can become a mountaineer in just a matter of seconds.

One of my favorite times when invited by the Chamber of Commerce in Boone, North Carolina to visit Watauga County, I soon discovered the Fosco Fishing Company and Outfitters and the world of fly fishing. OMG, what better way to relax and enjoy a day on the water or better still standing in the middle of a cool mountain stream or fishing the Watauga, Linville, Toe, Elk and New Mountain River. There is something about fishing that gives you time to think and appreciate the good things in life.

Fly fishing is an art and requires patience. You are there to outsmart the trout and make it think your “fly” could be delicious and absolutely the meal of the day. Catch and release is my personal choice while fishing, especially when you catch an old codger with many facial hook marks from capture and release over the years. I caught the big one, but before I could get the camera, it slipped away from my hands. (I know you heard that story before!) You stand in water proof pants and wading boots with everything you need attached to your outfit!

“Fly’s are the secret to success and you frequently have to change them to find which one is the right one for the day. There is a certain way to cast and a moment you just watch and ready yourself to snap the line and catch your Brown, Brook or Rainbow Trout. My day was considered lucky as I caught around eight Rainbow trout before heading back to the Outfitter’s office.

This is a must when you go to the hills. Contact the Fosco Fishing Company and Outfitters at 828-963-6556 and make a reservation before arriving in Boone. You can go to their wedsite for information: Remember they are open year round!

My personal thanks to Scott Farfone, the owner, John Lord, the manager and Tyler Almond, my fishing guide. Each one is extremely professional and experienced. They certainly had my interest and I will be fly fishing in the future.

If it is all about vacation and you want to really get away for the hustle and bustle of everyday living, walk in silence as you fly fish in a pristine mountain stream.
